After fifteen years as a painter-glazier for the Compagnons du Devoir, the extraordinary French craftsman’s guild dating back to the Middle Ages, Mathias broke out of this highly codified system to explore new creative horizons. Working with private collectors and commissions, as well as some of France’s most emblematic luxury brands, Kiss reinvents and disrupts French decorative tropes – such as mirrors, moldings, frescoes, marble, gilt, and parquet – to create small- and large-scale installations that bridge the decorative arts with contemporary art.
