The Art of Fashion Week

François Pinault’s new Bourse de Commerce â€“  the city's major art opening of 2021 – isn’t launching this week as planned, stymied by Covid-19 museum closures. But on the plus side there are gallery openings left, right and centre, plus a new momentum in art hotspot the triangle d’or. Fashion is also getting in on the act, with Brit painter Peter Doig gracing Dior’s FW21 show for Paris Men’s Fashion Week, currently underway with debuts by BassCouturValette Studio and Kidill, plus Y/Project’s first ever co-ed show on Sunday (don't miss the Doig collab at 2pm today on Dior's site). A purely virtual Haute Couture Week (25-28 Jan) then picks up the slack from Monday, co-starring man of the hour Kim Jones (for Fendi) and Alber Elbaz on the comeback. Meanwhile, in the real world, after a fortnight’s delay, it’s winter sales time, with prices slashed ‘til 16 Feb!

Life in Paris

Black Market Pop-Up â€“ Fresh from curating museum show Black Thread in Stockholm, Togo-born designer Amah Ayivi’s “ghetto style” approach to fashion – he sources colourful second-hand threads, mostly in Togo, and brings them back to Paris - is popping up at Ofr. The event is running daily throughout Men’s Fashion Week from 10am-5.30pm.

Paloma Opening – Restaurants around the capital may still be languishing, after Macron, Castex and co. put the kibosh on their planned relaunch this past Wednesday, but hooray – that’s not stopping Paloma, upping Belleville's food cred as of this week. The bistro offers solid country plats from terrine to pork cheeks, as well as natural wines – available for takeaway.

Making News

Almine Rech Branches Out â€“ The Parisian dealer (of Jeff Koons etc.) has taken a punt on a second outpost in the capital, located on the prestigious Avenue Matignon (and soon to be joined by Emmanuel Perrotin, now embracing the secondary market). US artist Kenny Scharf, fresh from his own Dior collab with Kim Jones, baptises the gallery with the psychedelic Vaxi Nation, now showing. >alminerech.com

Boltanski is Back â€“ A year on from his Pompidou retrospective, Christian Boltanski's new solo outing, Après, has just opened at Marion Goodman. Presenting sculptures, video projections and installations, it spans old works and ones made during confinement. Prepare to be haunted by ghostly kids’ faces and masses of white cloths on trolleys as you stroll about the darkly meditative show. >mariangoodman.com
