Shakespeare & Company

Legendary English bookshop and now café lords it over the Left Bank

37 Rue de la Bûcherie
75005 Paris,
M° Saint-Michel

On the Left Bank of the Seine facing Notre-Dame, this celebrated bookshop sits on a tiny square festooned with fairy lights. On the left, a wooden readers’ bench sits in front of the shop’s antiquarian book department. Next to that is the café owner Sylvia opened in 2015, fulfilling a long-running dream of her father George (run by the team behind Bob’s Bake Shop, it offers a largely veggie menu). Look out for the shop dog, Colette, or the adopted stray cat, Aggie, too!
